When Should You Start Fertility Acupuncture? How Often and for How Long?

Your guide to fertility acupuncture when trying to conceive naturally or preparing for IVF.

If you're considering fertility acupuncture, you probably have a few questions.

When should I start? How often will I need treatment? And how long should I continue?

These are some of the most common questions I hear from women who are trying to conceive naturally or preparing for IVF.

When you're hoping for a baby, it's understandable to want results as quickly as possible. But fertility is complex, and acupuncture isn't something that can promise pregnancy after just one or two appointments.

At Empower to Wellness in Ipswich, Suffolk, I offer personalised fertility acupuncture, taking into account your menstrual cycle, overall health and individual fertility journey.

Let's look at what you can realistically expect.

When Is the Best Time to Start Fertility Acupuncture?

Where possible, I recommend considering fertility acupuncture approximately three months before trying to conceive or beginning IVF.

This gives us time to look at your menstrual cycle, general health, sleep, stress levels and any symptoms affecting your wellbeing.

However, there's no single perfect time to start.

Some women begin acupuncture before actively trying for a baby, while others come to me after several months of trying to conceive or when fertility treatment is already underway.

Whatever stage you're at, acupuncture can be adapted to your individual circumstances.

Why Is Three Months Often Recommended?

The three-month timeframe is often discussed in fertility care because egg development involves several stages over a number of months, while sperm production takes approximately two to three months.

This makes the months leading up to conception a useful opportunity to focus on preconception health, including nutrition, sleep, lifestyle and managing existing health conditions.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, it also gives us time to observe your menstrual cycle and tailor acupuncture treatments to its different phases.

For example, your treatment may change during menstruation, the follicular phase, around ovulation and during the luteal phase.

The three-month period provides a valuable opportunity to take a consistent, personalised approach to your reproductive health and overall wellbeing. It allows us to work across several menstrual cycles, adapt your acupuncture treatments and review how your body responds over time.

How Often Should I Have Fertility Acupuncture, and for How Long?

For women trying to conceive naturally or preparing for IVF, I generally recommend weekly fertility acupuncture for an initial three months.

This allows us to work across several menstrual cycles, tailor acupuncture treatments to different stages of your cycle, and monitor changes in your symptoms and overall wellbeing.

After three months, we review your progress together. Depending on your individual circumstances and response to treatment, we may continue with regular appointments or gradually space sessions further apart.

Fertility acupuncture is a personalised course of care rather than a one-off treatment. However, it's important to understand that acupuncture cannot guarantee pregnancy or IVF success, and there is no scientifically established treatment duration that improves fertility outcomes.

My aim is to provide realistic expectations and a treatment plan tailored to your individual fertility journey.

Can I Have Just One or Two Fertility Acupuncture Sessions?

You can choose to have a single acupuncture session, but it's important to understand what to expect.

My usual fertility acupuncture approach involves regular appointments, allowing us to review your symptoms and adapt treatment over time.

One or two sessions don't provide the same opportunity to follow your menstrual cycle and assess your response across several weeks.

Fertility acupuncture is best approached with consistency and realistic expectations. Regular appointments allow us to work across several menstrual cycles, adapt treatment to your individual needs and review your response over time.

This is why I generally recommend committing to an initial three months of weekly acupuncture rather than relying on one or two isolated sessions.

I understand that fertility support can involve both an emotional and financial commitment. That's why I believe in explaining my recommended treatment plan clearly from the beginning, so you can make an informed decision about what's right for you.

What If I'm Already Preparing for IVF?

If you're preparing for IVF, ICSI or frozen embryo transfer (FET), you don't necessarily need to complete three months of acupuncture before your fertility treatment begins.

Acupuncture can be tailored to the different stages of an IVF cycle, including ovarian stimulation, the period around egg collection, embryo transfer and the two-week wait.

The acupuncture points and treatment approach may change depending on your IVF protocol, health history and stage of treatment.

Acupuncture is complementary care and should always work alongside your fertility clinic's medical recommendations.

Research into acupuncture and IVF has produced mixed findings, and it has not been reliably established that acupuncture improves IVF live-birth rates.

What If I'm Trying to Conceive Naturally?

You don't need to be undergoing IVF to consider fertility acupuncture.

Some women choose acupuncture while trying to conceive naturally, particularly if they're experiencing irregular periods, painful periods, PCOS, endometriosis or the emotional demands of trying for a baby.

Your treatment is tailored to your menstrual cycle, symptoms and general health.

Acupuncture doesn't replace fertility investigations or medical treatment. If you've been trying to conceive for a year without success, or sooner if you're aged 36 or over or have known fertility concerns, it's important to speak with your GP.

A Personalised Approach to Fertility Acupuncture in Ipswich

Every fertility journey is different.

Some women are just beginning to think about pregnancy, while others have been trying for months or years. Some are preparing for IVF, and others are looking for support alongside ongoing fertility investigations.

My approach is to consider the whole person, not just the fertility diagnosis.

My usual recommendation is weekly fertility acupuncture for an initial three months, followed by a review and an individually tailored plan for ongoing treatment where appropriate.

The aim is to provide realistic expectations, personalised care and a supportive space throughout your fertility journey.

If you're considering fertility acupuncture in Ipswich, Suffolk, we can discuss your circumstances and an appropriate treatment plan at your first appointment.
