Acupuncture and IVF: Supporting Your Fertility Journey Naturally

How Fertility Acupuncture Can Work Alongside IVF and Assisted Fertility Treatment

Going through IVF can feel overwhelming.

Suddenly there are appointments, scans, medications, blood tests, follicles, embryos and dates to remember—all alongside the emotions that naturally come with hoping for a baby.

For some women and couples, fertility acupuncture becomes an additional source of support during this time.

Acupuncture doesn't replace IVF or conventional fertility treatment, and it can't guarantee a successful pregnancy. Instead, fertility acupuncture can be used alongside your medical care, with treatments tailored to your individual health and the different stages of your IVF journey.

At my clinic in Ipswich, Suffolk, I offer personalised fertility acupuncture for women preparing for and undergoing IVF and other assisted fertility treatments.

What Is IVF and Assisted Fertility Treatment?

IVF stands for in vitro fertilisation. During IVF, medication is usually used to stimulate the ovaries so that several eggs develop. The eggs are collected and fertilised in a laboratory before an embryo is transferred into the uterus.

Depending on your circumstances, fertility treatment may also include:

  • ICSI – intracytoplasmic sperm injection

  • IUI – intrauterine insemination

  • FET – frozen embryo transfer

  • Donor eggs or donor sperm

These treatments may fall within the broader area of assisted reproductive technology (ART) and assisted conception.

Every fertility journey is different, which is why I believe acupuncture treatment should be individual too.

How Is Acupuncture Used Alongside IVF?

Fertility acupuncture isn't simply about helping you relax.

When used alongside IVF, acupuncture can be tailored to the different stages of your treatment cycle.

Rather than using exactly the same acupuncture points at every appointment, treatment can be adapted according to your health, symptoms, fertility protocol and where you are within your IVF journey.

This may include acupuncture during:

  • Preparation before IVF begins

  • Ovarian stimulation

  • Around egg collection

  • Preparation for embryo transfer

  • Around embryo transfer

  • Frozen embryo transfer cycles

  • The two-week wait

Treatment can also support sleep, relaxation, stress management and emotional wellbeing throughout the process.

Your fertility clinic remains responsible for your medical treatment. Acupuncture is complementary care designed to work alongside—not replace—your fertility treatment.

When Should I Start Acupuncture Before IVF?

This is one of the questions I'm asked most often.

Where possible, some women choose to begin fertility acupuncture approximately three months before IVF treatment starts.

This gives us time to look at your menstrual cycle and overall health, including sleep, nutrition, stress, energy and lifestyle, before treatment begins.

But three months isn't a rule.

If your IVF cycle starts sooner—or you've already begun treatment—it doesn't mean you're too late for acupuncture. Your treatment can simply be adapted to where you are now.

I'll explore this in more detail in my next article:

When Should You Start Fertility Acupuncture? Why Three Months Can Make a Difference

Acupuncture During IVF Stimulation

During ovarian stimulation, fertility medication encourages multiple follicles to develop.

Acupuncture treatments during this stage can be adapted according to your IVF protocol, your individual presentation and how you're feeling as treatment progresses.

This is also where the personalised nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is important.

Two women may be following similar IVF protocols but have very different menstrual histories, sleep patterns, stress levels, digestion, energy and overall health.

Their acupuncture treatments may therefore be different too.

Acupuncture Around Egg Collection and Embryo Transfer

Your acupuncture treatment can change again as you approach egg collection and embryo transfer.

There are specific acupuncture approaches that practitioners may use around these stages, with points selected according to the stage of fertility treatment and the individual woman.

You may have heard particularly about acupuncture before and after embryo transfer.

This area has been researched extensively, but results are mixed. Some studies have reported encouraging findings, while others haven't found significant improvements in outcomes such as live birth.

For this reason, acupuncture shouldn't be presented as something that guarantees implantation, pregnancy or IVF success.

Instead, it can be viewed as personalised complementary care alongside your fertility treatment.

What Does the Research Say About Acupuncture and IVF?

Research into acupuncture alongside IVF has produced mixed but interesting results.

Some individual studies of acupuncture and related acupoint therapies have reported positive outcomes, while other studies have found little or no significant difference.

Current guidance from the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) states that acupuncture may be used alongside conventional fertility treatment, but evidence about whether it improves the chances of having a baby remains unclear.

What is clear is that acupuncture is already widely used by fertility patients. In the HFEA's 2024 National Patient Survey, 27% of respondents reported using acupuncture as an additional treatment or therapy.

That's why I prefer not to promise a particular IVF success rate. My approach is to provide fertility-specific, individualised acupuncture that complements your medical treatment and adapts as your fertility journey progresses.

Supporting You Through the Two-Week Wait

The period between embryo transfer and your pregnancy test can be particularly difficult.

It's very easy to analyse every sensation and wonder whether it means something.

During this time, acupuncture can provide a quiet space where the focus moves away from appointments, results and numbers for a little while and back towards you.

Fertility treatment can be physically and emotionally demanding, and looking after your wellbeing matters too.

You don't have to arrive at your acupuncture appointment feeling positive or pretending everything is fine.

You can simply arrive as you are.

How Often Should I Have Acupuncture During IVF?

There isn't one schedule that's right for everyone.

Some women choose regular acupuncture in the months leading up to IVF, with treatment adapted as their fertility cycle progresses.

How often you attend will depend on your health history, IVF schedule, individual needs and where you are within your treatment cycle.

I prefer to create an individual treatment plan rather than use a one-size-fits-all approach.
